These acronyms are typically found in microbiological analyses. “CFU” is “Colony Forming Unit” and is usually used when counting bacteria on a plate. “MF” and “MPN” indicate what type of method was used to test your sample. “MF” is “membrane filtration”, while “MPN” stands for “Most Probable Number” and is usually used when tube fermentation methodology is employed. “<1” This result is typically seen for Total Coliform analyses. The symbol “<” means “less than”. The result “<1” is read as “Less than one”. This is the lowest possible, and best, result for your sample.
